Graduates seek further study to avoid tough jobs market

Some 35pc of the class of 2010 are taking into account studying some sort of postgraduate qualification this year, such as a Master’s stage, a poll of 1,000 graduates by Orange has revealed.

Orange afore~ students were anxious about their chances of finding a job that they be missed in the current jobs market and were seeking further study to advantage a competitive advantage over other candidates. The news comes after a account earlier this month warned nearly 70 graduates are vying for each job going.

However, Sonja Stockton, of graduate employer PricewaterhouseCoopers, warned graduates not to rush into further study while employers do not necessarily value extra qualifications over real-life actual trial.

“Despite the growing trend of graduates continuing to study after completing their undergraduate division , further post graduate education isn’t necessarily more valuable in the eyes of employers,” she afore~. “Work experience and other ways of developing your employability skills, of the like kind as through voluntary work, internships and extra curricular activities can test to employers just as effectively that you have developed desirable skills required for your job and future career.”

She added: “Graduates should reassess their lengthy term career goals and be flexible about the opportunities and employers they give. They should take action to match their experience to employers’ requirements and turn the thoughts for opportunities that offer excellent training.”

Set long-term goals. If you don’t be sure where you are heading to, how are you going to procure there?

Research the market. Be clear about what your potential employer is looking as antidote to and work towards meeting those objectives.

Get out there and reticulated. Build a list of important contacts.

Get your foot in the means of approach. This can be through internships, summer academies or unpaid work and pleasure show your interest in a company.

Don’t give up. Everyone faces declination at some point so keep your long-term goals in pay attention to.
